It is hard to pick which one is superior or worth the cost. However, this review will highlight some of the key differences to help you make a rational decision.
KEF Q150 vs LS50 Review
I was so sick and tired of everyone in my circle arguing about which speaker is the best performer. Therefore, I took it upon myself to find out what the hype is all about.
While researching, I got to know that there were many confused audiophiles like me, not knowing which way to go.
The main difference between KEF Q150 and LS50 is the frequency range. Another thing that sets these speakers apart is the price point.
LS50 is pricier, however, the main question is if it is worth the price hike. Get to know about these KEF speakers individually before learning the differences in detail.
KEF Q150
KEF Q150 looks quite high-end with a nice finish. The brand is known for having high-quality, expensive speakers. However, Q150 is not as expensive as some other models but packs a punch. It is equipped with exclusive Uni-Q technology for better sound quality.
This technology makes the sound appear from a single source. It has a warm midrange but lacks the low-end frequency response. KEF Q150 covers the frequency range from 51 Hz to 28k HZ.
KEF LS50
KEF LS50 Meta is a 2.0 version of the popular KEF LS50 mini monitor. The manufacturer promised it to be more lethal than the original one due to a new technology Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT).
KEF introduced and implemented several improvements to enhance sound transparency and accuracy.
It is designed to eliminate distortions and cover a wider frequency response. In short, there are plenty of subtle cosmetic differences and new elements to look forward to. However, the huge price may make one wonder if it is really worth it. This is one of the best bookshelf speakers under 2000.
Difference Between KEF Q150 vs LS50 Review
In my opinion, it is a little unfair to compare these two speakers. Since LS50 is pricier with multiple upgrades, it is a no-brainer that it would have better audio. Well, the whole audiophile community wants to know which one is better, hence, let’s get on with it.
Sound Quality
Let’s kick off our review with sound quality as nothing is more important than this. Q150 boasts unique sound, warm midrange, adequate bass, and excellent clarity.
As for percussion, it may not reproduce the desired snappiness. The Uni-Q driver array allows for a more precise 3D sound image.
The Uni-Q driver is positioned at the center of the cabinet to minimize vibrations and make the audio and bass clearer.
Another thing that surprised me the most was that it does not cover the low-ends, still, it reproduced cleaner bass.
Treble and bass performance was improved significantly thanks to the damped tweeter loading tube.
On the other hand, I found out that the hype surrounding LS50 is justified. Some users that I have interacted with said that it should have been more expensive considering the sound quality. The speaker covers the high tones exceptionally well with plenty of details.
As for the midrange, it sounds more natural with excellent clarity. In fact, reproducing a warm midrange put it in the limelight.
In short, it reproduces audio as it is intended to sound. When it comes to bass, LS50 speakers can kick out some deep bass pretty well. Its bass performance can not be compared to a subwoofer, however, it’s quite impressive.
There are no distortions when the sound is played at a high volume. On the whole, LS50 is not hyped for nothing, in fact, it sounds amazingly good.
Frequency Range
KEF Q150 covers a wider frequency response between 51 Hz to 28k HZ with a 2.5k HZ crossover frequency.
On the contrary, LS50 takes it a notch further by covering the 47 Hz to 45k Hz frequency range. The crossover frequency is 2.1k Hz.
Weight
KEF Q150 is heavier, weighing approximately 25 pounds. In comparison, LS50 is more compact and travel-friendly as it weighs only 10 pounds.
Design
I have to admit that both speakers look incredibly good. As for Q150, it comes in multiple finishes, for instance, satin white, satin black, and walnut finish.
Personally, I liked the walnut finish which stands out and looks sophisticated on a desk, stands, or bookshelf. Since these speakers are a bit bulkier, moving them is quite difficult. I believe it would not be a problem if the user has figured out the best placement.
In contrast, LS50 has more color combinations and finesse. It is the first thing you will notice when entering the room.
Each color has a beautiful contrasting driver. For instance, black with an orangish driver, blue with a gold driver, and grey with a red driver. These loud color combinations immediately grab attention.
Price
Another key difference is the price and it will impact your buying decision significantly.
One is significantly pricier while the other is not that affordable either. Q150 is being sold at $599.98.
Many potential buyers will argue that there are plenty of bookshelf speakers available at half the price. It is true, however, it offers value for money.
Comparably, LS50 is sold at a whopping $1599.98. Not many audiophiles can afford to invest in such high-end speakers.
It produces nearly perfect sound, therefore, it is justified for it to be this expensive. Additionally, many speakers offering the same sound quality are four or five pricier.
Conclusion
While both speakers are exceptionally good, LS50 is a winner for me. Since it is pricier, it obviously has better features and futuristic technology. From sound to design, LS50 is nearly perfect.
While I chose LS50, it does not mean that Q150 is a poorer KEF speaker model. It definitely packs a punch with its superior build and sound. If you have a tight budget, it is better to stick to Q150.
